"...Across the street is the Hotel Lincoln Antiques, where you'll hear one of the most bizarre histories of any place along the road. Steve and Darlene Hall purchased it sight unseen at a sheriff's sale in 1988 (when they also owned the Coral Caverns), not knowing that the place had been a pretty wild bar in recent years. There were forty-some bullet holes throughout the place, and the ceiling had been used as a giant X-rated graffiti pad - for $1 per square, visitors could personalize a section of the ceiling. The hotel began as a boardinghouse in 1870. Clyde Crissey bought it in 1926 and tore down everything but the kitchen. He rebuilt it with a large ballroom, a double-deck porch, and nine rooms upstairs. The hotel also offered gas and food. As its reputation slid, it changed names; the Red Bat Cave, then Happy Trails Bar and Grill. But according to locals, the wild reputation was nothing new: One visitor told Steve and Darlene about a woman who had worked at the hotel in the 1930s, both downstairs at the bar and "upstairs in the rooms". When her husband stopped by one night, he found her in room number one with another man and proceeded to hang his wife and shoot the man. The kicked-in door still rests in the attic. Steve counts fourteen deaths at the site: six inside the hotel, two in the parking lot, and six more pulling into traffic. The Hall's sold it in 2002; now it's Foor's Lincoln Outlet." |
